For millennia, residents of the Verde Valley gathered and ate nutritious mesquite. Today, the flour of the deliciously sweet and nutty pods is making a comeback with gourmet chefs, health aficionados, and fans of local foods. The question is, how to prepare them?
Prescott College is helping to answer that question with a Community Mesquite Milling at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at Windmill Park. In 2008, Prescott College acquired a hammer mill as part of the College's commitment to sustainable food sources. Using the mill, the College processes locally grown and harvested crops and forage foods into meal for cooking, using many of these local foods in the College's own Crossroads Cafe. This November, for the first time, the College is making the mill available to the community to process mesquite pods into flour. The public is invited to bring their own harvested pods, clean and dried, to be milled. For more information on pod practices and prices, please visit the Desert Harvesters website. Please also contact Jourdie Ross for information on the event at 310-749-1286 or jross@prescott.edu.
