|Woman mauled by bear near Pinetop-Lakeside|
A Gilbert woman was listed in serious but stable condition today following a bear attack near her vacation home in the Pinetop-Lakeside area. Navajo County Sheriff’s Lt Stephan Birdsong says the 61-year old woman was walking her dog around 11:30PM in the Pinetop Country Club area when she apparently stumbled upon the spot where a male black bear had been storing trash he’d taken from nearby dumpsters. As neighbors heard the woman’s screams, they shouted and made noise in an effort to scare the bear. Birdsong says the animal retreated twice but then attacked the woman a second and third time before finally running away. As medical personnel arrived to tend to the victim, officials with Arizona Game and Fish and the Wildlife Service used tracking dogs to locate and destroy the bear. The bear was estimated at 6-feet long and 200 to 300 pounds. The victim was flown to a Phoenix area hospital.
